BILLINGS – Medical marijuana advocates held a town hall style meeting Saturday evening to exchange ideas and raise money for their upcoming legal battle.

The Montana Cannabis Industry Association organized the event, which was held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

A group spokesman said they want Senate Bill 423 throw out. The legislation would reduce the number of medical marijuana patients in the state and ban commercial caregivers.

“You see people from all over the spectrum now are getting involved because its more than just about pot anymore. It’s our voters’ rights. There are a lot of things going on in this state that are basically a travesty, and we’re trying to do something about that,” said event organizer Ed Doctor.

Representatives said the group has raised more than $70,000 already and hope to reach $1 million.

UPDATE: A welcome addition had been added to the schedule for this Saturday’s fundraiser and mixer.  address the group at 5:30 p.m. Don’t miss it. Show your support for those legislators who support you.

Montana NORML UPDATE-

Montana Cannabis Industry Association (MTCIA) Update:  Hosting Fundraiser, Network, Information Exchange Event in Billings Saturday, May 21, 2011 Coming to Helena, Bozeman Soon?

Another brief update:

The MTCIA is holding another valuable event, this time in Billings on Saturday:

http://www.mtcia.org/2011/05/mtcia-mixer-and-fundraiser-in-billings-this-saturday-may-21/

If you’re in that neck of the woods, I hope you can attend.

(We’re told Bozeman and Helena may be next. Let me know if you have ideas or want to help.)

As I mentioned last week, our temporary restraining order halted the ban on cannabis advertising — temporarily. We’ll know in a few weeks  whether the courts agree.

Meanwhile, the MTCIA’s lawsuit to block the entirety of the horrible SB 423 has been filed and awaits judicial review. More news on that soon

In other news, DPHHS has updated their website with details about the new law, should it take effect. Patients, caregivers, and doctors should read the FAQ carefully: http://www.dphhs.mt.gov/medicalmarijuana/

I’m on the board of the new MTCIA (http://mtcia.org), and the organization clearly has the momentum, expertise, network, and motivation required to give the cannabis industry in Montana a fighting chance. Funds and volunteers are needed. Help if you can.

I’ll have news about the referendum petition later this week. Stay tuned.

If you make it to the Billings event on Saturday, please introduce yourself.  The more the cannabis community becomes a community, the better chance we have to repel the anachronistic, intolerant attacks of the prohibitionists.

Gratefully,

John Masterson

SB 423 will destroy access to medical cannabis in Montana. We need to stop SB 423. We need thoughtful regulations for the good and safety of patients, to protect businesses, and for the sake of guidance for law enforcement, and SB 423 doesn’t do it.

Donate today to protect medical marijuana in Montana!

May 14, 2011: News UPDATE for SB423 Rallies, Protests, Advertising and SB423 becoming LAW!!!

UPDATE from: http://www.StopSB423.com/

 What we are doing…

Our Defense is not a secret, and our legislature has been educated on what we are able to do to combat this REPEAL in DISGUISE…they are counting on the divisions within our community, because they know that if we would work together, we could defeat them.

We have a four stage missile that we have launched, and every person in this country can help at each stage. The efforts include:

  • Attempting to get the Governor to VETO SB423 & trying to convince those legislators who don’t want medical marijuana, to change their minds.

  • Court action against the State of Montana, including an injunction that halts SB423, keeping the existing laws in place.

  • Petitions and signature drives, all over Montana, that will effectively IMMEDIATELY repeal the SB423 once it does become law.

  • Writing our own initiative that will provide Montanans with the available access to the medicine we need.

Hello Friends and Fellow Medical Marijuana Supporters!

We are holding a public assembly this Friday, the 13th, to draw attention to the 300 people who die annually in Montana from prescription drug overdoses, most of them children.

Prescription drug companies are threatened by the medical marijuana industry so are funding some of our politicians to essentially bribe them into rejecting medical marijuana laws, all in an effort to keep their excessive profits.

We are asking everyone to please come to the assembly and bring as many friends as you can. If you are able to, we would like people to bring coffins to provide a visual for the people dying from these dangerous drugs. Most deaths related to prescription drugs are kids 18 and under so a variety of sizes will really show that. Coffins can be made out of any materials that you have. Here is a website for simple coffin building: http://wayneofthewoods.com/coffin%202.html

If you cannot attend, please donate whatever you can. We will have horse drawn carriages to pull the coffins and will need any donations to help fund those.

We will start in the KO’s parking lot (map direction link below) at 10 am and continue down Main Street in a progression of people, horse- drawn carriages and coffins. We will then assemble in the lawn of the Courthouse, with the coffins, and will have informative speakers. This will be a peaceful and quiet protest.

Please join us!

We would really appreciate a R.S.V.P. so that we can prepare for the turnout.

Hope to see you all there!

Also, we encourage all of you to check out this website: http://www.mtcia.org. Please make any donation that you can to support the fight against SB 423. Get Involved!!

Medical Marijuana Events in Montana

March 9, 2011

Helena, Montana Repeal of Medical Marijuana Senate Committee Hearing March 11, 2001:

Next Friday, the 11th, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear testimony on HB 161, the callous effort to erase medical marijuana from the law books of Montana. Montana NORML and a statewide coalition of cannabis reform organizations are doing everything we can to get as many people to the hearing as we can. Now is the time to put aside the hectic tasks of your regular daily schedule and SHOW UP.

We are asking professional growers/caregivers to consider Friday the 11th a “holiday”: gather 20 patients and get thee to Helena. If you’re already in Helena, you have no excuse not to be there:

WHEN: March 11, 2011, 8:00am
WHAT: Senate hearing on medical marijuana repeal
WHO: You, in your Sunday best, polite and respectful.
WHY: Because your health, or your livelihood, or your principled philosophy, depends on keeping cannabis legal.

Don’t have a ride? No problem. Our friends at MRL are coordinating FREE buses from all over. Check out this page on Facebook for info on buses. Make a call, find a ride, make it happen.

It’s important to show up because every person who shows up represents a hundred other people who didn’t bother. Be a leader!

It’s important to show up because while the repeal bill passed the Montana House easily, more “sober” minds rule the Senate, and when they see a massive outpouring of support for medical marijuana represented in our amassed crowd, they should acknowledge the political reality that legal cannabis is here to stay, and reject repeal in favor of thoughtful regulation.

Can’t make it? Is it just impossible? Then here are some other ways you can contact the committee and let them know that repeal of medical marijuana would be a disaster, politically, logistically, all around.

In a rush? Okay, here’s a quick and easy e-mail form. Let them know to “fix it, don’t nix it”. Just be sure to add your personal story so it doesn’t seem like too much of a form letter.

By the way – we could use your help in the form of donations. And, later this spring we’d like to recruit some additional board members.  Want to help lead Montana NORML? Email me.

Finally — we have a had a longstanding policy of sending a “goody pack” to any Montana resident who gets a pro-cannabis letter to the editor published.  I hope you’ll all consider writing one in the next 10 days. The time is right, and there’s a goody pack with your name on it! Just send us a link to your published letter.

Onwards!
