Bozeman Brewing Company, BEST local Brewery, OR “THE BEST” Local Brewery?!

I went for a drink at one of Bozeman‘s local watering holes. I had been referred many times in the years I’ve lived here in Montana, but never went. I am a hops head, LOVE HOPS!!! They are GOD’s given goodness that makes the tastebuds EXPLODE!! Well, I was in search of this Hoppy goodness I so desperately desire. I am riding my Schwinn Windwood Cruiser, name dropped, yes, down N. Broadway Ave heading north, when I spot a group of Bozeman‘s hip crowd. They were amassing at this pud, and I just hoped I could find the HOPS I was in the search for.

I have been drinking the Bridge Port’s  Hop Czar, OH MY GOD!!! The hops essence is the front and center sense assaultingly, electric jolt in the jaw, I NEED!! AHHH!!! I have an other! But I digress, this is not about the Bridge Port’s Hop Czar, it is in fact about this new local place I get to think I found ALL on my own… I walk in, look about at the faces… There were a lot of mustaches, must be preparation for Mustache May, and pretty women! I see a familiar face, Thomas. He instructs me to sit, I do, how could I refuse Thom!!

“Well, what is the hoppiest one here?”

He suggested the Hopzone, it was in fact what he was drinking. “As a matter of fact…”, he tells me, “…my first pint is  practically poured for me as I enter the door.” Shit, if it is  good enough for Thom, I though, why not. So I get my FREE taster, I stick my nose in. Flowers explode! I slurp, the electric fireworks ignite! Holly Shit!!! I thought I had tried “Goodbeer,

Bridge Port’s-India Pale Ale

Red Lodge Ales-Bent Nail India Pale Ale

Deschutes Brewery’s-Mirror Pond

Pyramid Breweries-ThunderHead India Pale Al

RedHook Ale Breweries’-Long Hammer

Grand Teton’s-Pursuit of Hoppieness Imperial Red Ale

,you get the just, I am kind of a hop drinker. BEER is the BEST, BUT I.P.A.  was designed with God’s inspiration for God’s tounge!!!

But, WOW!!! The Bozeman Brewing Company‘s Hopzone is a new staple. Have you ever heard,

“… Beer has food value, but food has no beer value…”

The service was the BEST!

Specialist Want Regulations / Oversight of Medical Marijuana Analysis Labs, Montana Biotech Embraces Open Dialog

Why do we need to standardize methods for purity and potency analysis in the medical marijuana research industry?

Is there a method that the DEA is not aware of, or is “better” than theirs? Because, if that is the case, Alliance for Cannabis Science needs to go and teach the Feds a thing or two! Until then, Montana Biotech will adhere to the same testing / analysis standards as the UNODC, NIDA, FDA, FBI, DEA, and the U.S. Federal Government!

Talking down to or bad mouthing other labs is no way to distinguish your self from the rest. Stand out, create something NEW. Be innovative, and be nimble!! DO SOMETHING different! Montana Biotech overlaps with many of these analysis labs, but we also strive to offer unique services and tools to the medical marijuana industry, as a whole, than any other lab offers!

All this discussion will be null and void if cannabis is rescheduled… No person / individual will be able to grow / manufacture their own medicine. We, the patients, have been arguing from a position of the affirmative. All we had to do was show that there WAS a MEDICINAL use for cannabis. We proved it safer than aspirin, and less addictive than caffeine! Yet, if we continue down this path it could lead to ruin.

My understanding, before $$$$$ entered into the equation,  Medical Marijuana was about people treating themselves!!! No government, no pharma, NOBODY between me and my medicine!!

Here are some quotes from:  http://www.cannabisnews.org/

Weed Science: Experts Urge Independent Auditing and Oversight of Medical-Cannabis-Testing Labs

“…California’s three-year dalliance with medical-cannabis laboratories hit a new milestone last month as the public began calling for a better system for testing prescription pot. …”

Tell me California, do you remember being in “three years of dalliance”? I thought people were taking this deadly serious!

“…One problem with standardizing labs is that the Drug Enforcement Administration only permits a handful of marijuana researchers in the country, and two medical cannabis labs who applied for a DEA permit in Colorado were raided in 2010. …”

That is a HUGE hurdle!!! Not to mention, a DEA 225 excludes you from working with the medical marijuana industry.

DEA 225: http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugreg/reg_apps/index.html

So, let us keep medical marijuana where it should be, with the patients! I am a patient 1st, a caregiver 2nd. I come from the position of, “This is my medicine, keep you hands off it!”

“…Dutch phytochemist Arno Hazekamp, head of research and development for the Netherlands’ sole government-sanctioned plant cannabis producer, Bedrocan…”

In the Dutch system of medical marijuana, patients are NOT allowed to produce their OWN medicine!! Just a little bit of a different bend on medical cannabis than here in the United States. Tell producers of medical marijuana there is only ONE way to grow weed and you find out what happens!!!!

“… Since the advent of quantifiable pot potency, marijuana strains with the highest amount of THC, expressed as a percentage of dried plant matter, often become the best sellers at dispensaries.  As a result, there’s pressure for labs to post higher THC potency results; some say club owners shop around various labs until they get desired THC percentages.  THC content can vary from zero to about 25 percent.  “I have seen numbers up to 38 percent,” said Hazekamp.  “My reaction is: ‘That’s wrong.’”…”

Here is an example of two different testing laboratory results analyzing cannabis for potency located in Bozeman Montana.

Montana Botanical Analysis
Montana Biotech

Alliance for Cannabis Science is advocating for a standardizing of methods. There appears to be plenty of PEER REVIEWED methods for testing the potency of cannabis. It seem like they,  Alliance for Cannabis Science, want to be” THE AUTHORITY”. The DEA is an AUTHORITY in most of the world!! You will be reminded of their AUTHORITY if you meet them in court. In the end, if there are problems with current testing methods, why is this the first I have heard about it? If a single method is needed why not the same one as the DEA, or the UNODC, NIDA?

From TLC to GC/MS, there are peer reviewed methods for each. Do they, Alliance for Cannabis Science, want to look under the hood of my car to see why mine is faster, or do they want to just make sure there is an internal combustion engine and not an Apache attach helicopter turbine.  All labs disclose “their” testing method, and equipment used in the analysis processPurity testing is a WHOLE other can of worms from potency analysis… Montana Biotech does not currently offer this service do to our perception of liability risk.

ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Cannabinoids and Medical Marijuana

ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

Cannabinol delays symptom onset
Cannabinol delays symptom onset in SOD1 (G93A) tra…[Amyotroph Lateral Scler Other Motor Neuron Disord. 2005] – PubMed Result

Abstract

Therapeutic options for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common adult-onset motor neuron disorder, remain limited. Emerging evidence from clinical studies and transgenic mouse models of ALS suggests that cannabinoids, the bioactive ingredients of marijuana (Cannabis sativa) might have some therapeutic benefit in this disease. However, Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(9)-THC), the predominant cannabinoid in marijuana, induces mind-altering effects and is partially addictive, compromising its clinical usefulness. We therefore tested whether cannabinol (CBN), a non-psychotropic cannabinoid, influences disease progression and survival in the SOD1 (G93A) mouse model of ALS. CBN was delivered via subcutaneously implanted osmotic mini-pumps (5 mg/kg/day) over a period of up to 12 weeks. We found that this treatment significantly delays disease onset by more than two weeks while survival was not affected. Further research is necessary to determine whether non-psychotropic cannabinoids might be useful in ameliorating symptoms in ALS.

Medicinal Cannabinoid Analysis Laboratory, Medical Marijuana / Cannabis Biotech Research Specialist Located in Bozeman Montana

I have entered into some discussions regarding THC vs THCA analysis for potency testing standards for reporting cannabinoid levels found in medical marijuana. For the next few weeks Montana Biotech will be posting PEER reviewed papers outlining the differing methods for analyzing the cannabinoid contents in cannabis marijuana.

Accuracy, accuracy this is the mantra of a scientist!! We need this accuracy to create valid lines of data to uphold our hypothesis. Current research regarding cannabis and exogenous cannabinoids has been conducted by MANY different labs in MANY different countries!! There has been little if any collaboration on methods for testing cannabinoid contents of cannabis marijuana, hemp.

The discussion was expanded on by Green Jon, senior member,  at TreatYourself.com

Gas v. Liquid Chromatography

Gas chromatography and liquid chromatography differ in one way that is important to the analysis of cannabinoids. Gas chromatography uses heat and liquid chromatography does not. Heat allows the sample of marijuana to go through a chemical process called decarboxylation, which is a necessary step to determine the exact amount of CBD and THC that can be absorbed into the body. The body will not absorb marijuana that has not been decarboxylated, which is why prior to a patients use marijuana is always exposed to heat. Marijuana is decarboxylated either through smoking, vaporizing, or cooking butter.

Analyzing medical marijuana without decarboxylation, like through liquid chromatography, allows only for the measurement of the maximum THC and CBD possible in a sample. This produces high numbers that are not useful to patients because they will need to decarboxylze marijuana in order to feel its effects.

This is why Gas Chromatography has been the method of choice for the quantification of cannabinoids by both the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

In the end, the choice is YOURS as to who you feel good working with, who can give you the most bang for your buck?! Montana Biotech uses the same methodology as the labs that would be prosecuting you. Montana Biotech will be able to stand with a Hemp farmer in a court of law and state that their cannabis IS hemp! Those labs on the prosecutions side cares not if you have THCA, it is total percent per volume THC that is federally regulated as a schedule 1 narcotic, hemp and hemp product are excluded. The other cannabinoids are not federally regulated when present in volumes higher or lower than the allowable .03% THC/ volume.

Botanical Testing Services:

Montana BioTech currently offers two types of testing.

Botanical Diagnostic Analysis:

This service is intended for both the caregiver and patient. Montana BioTech collects sample/s from the caregiver or patient of 500mg or ½ gram. We then isolate the resin and put it through a rigorous lab testing process. We then analyze the data and return to the caregiver or patient a document outlining a percent per volume amount of the botanical cannabinoids THC, CBD, CBN, as well as percent of assayable botanical cannabinoids. This lab test is only representative of the sample volume and is not a certification. 50% deposit is due when the sample/s are submitted. Test results are confidential and are released at the caregivers or patients discretion.

Botanical Diagnostic Analysis can be used for:

-Perfecting the curing of botanical flowers.

-Switching to a new technique of growing. Soil vs hydro etc.

-Helping to determine harvest times for different varieties/cultivars / strains.

-Self analyzing botanical varieties/cultivars / strains for therapeutic effect.

Analyzing botanical varieties/cultivars /strains for breeding or results from crosses.

Certification:

This service is intended for the breeder. Any person developing a unique variety/cultivar / strain and wanting to release it should get some kind of documentation certifying their cross. Caregivers can use this service to certify their medicine as quality. This is a methods based test, and is conducted by Montana BioTech technicians. We collect a representative sample of the volume to be certified (~ 1g/ .25 pound), isolate the resin and put the sample through a rigorous lab testing process. We analyze the data and prepare a results sheet. Montana BioTech will then issue a certificate to the caregiver or patient certifying the specified volume at the analyzed THC, CBD, CBN content / levels. 20% is due when collection has taken place. Test results are confidential and are released at the caregivers or patients discretion.

Certification is for:

-Assuring a caregivers’ patient/s that they are providing a quality botanical product.

-Transfers to other caregivers. Assure them the medicine is of top quality.

-Releasing a new variety/cultivar / strain to other caregivers.

-Patients to better determine the therapeutic effects of certified strains on THEIR condition.

-Helping to legitimize a controversial industry.

According to research published in Behavioral Neuroscience, cannabidiol (CBD) may act as a wake-inducing agent. Cannabidiol is a major constituent of cannabis, but unlike the more well-known chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it does not appear to have any psychoactive effects.

In the study, which was published in 2008, the lateral hypothalamus and dorsal raphe nuclei of rats were injected with cannabidiol. The lateral hypothalamus and dorsal raphe nuclei are both areas of brain associated with alertness and wakefulness.

Before being injected with cannabidiol, the rats had been implanted with electrodes to record their brain-waves and the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.

“This experiment is the first characterization of the effects on sleep of CBD injected into specific wakerelated areas. Our data demonstrate that administrations of CBD into either [the lateral hypothalamus] or [the dorsal raphe nuclei] during the lights-on period increased wakefulness and decreased [slow wave sleep] and [REM sleep] in rats,” as the researchers explain.

Abstract
The use of Cannabis is illicit in numerous countries and the increasing consumption has led to a multiplication of scientific studies. New methods of planar chromatography such as Automated Multiple Development (AMD) and Optimum Performance Laminar Chromatography (OPLC) techniques can be used as a substitute for the traditional TLC for the identification and quantification of the Indian hemp components. Each method offers its own advantage: high resolution with neither diffusion nor spot stretching for AMD, speed, efficiency and the possibility of working in semi-preparative mode for OPLC.

Scientists Find New Sources of Plant Cannabinoids Other than Medical Marijuana?

July 12th, 2010 | by J.Marcu |

The British Journal of Pharmacology (link to article: BJP) has devoted another issue to the theme of cannabinoids. This issue contains numerous intriguing articles that you would be hard pressed to find discussed among media and science outlets.  In a recent NPR Science Friday show on medical cannabis, Ira Flatow and guests suggested that there is a suppression of cannabis and cannabinoid research findings due to politics. This causes some journals to reject cannabinoid research without even reading the manuscript.  Research journals are hesitant to publish research on cannabinoids, and many researchers often have to squander valuable funds re-submitting articles until they find a journal that will allow their research to be peer reviewed.  The BJP deserves our attention for the great service it is doing for cannabinoid researchers—allowing our findings to be shared and discussed. One particular article in the BJP captured the imagination and wonder of cannabinoid science. The authors speculate on additional sources of plant cannabinoids, beyond the cannabis plant.

It appears that other plants produce things that directly and indirectly affect the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a system in our body which produces compounds or ligands that activate specific receptors. This system regulates important functions of mammals. If you have ever slept, eaten, forgot, or relaxed then you have used your ECS.

The receptors for cannabinoids are one of the most abundant receptors in the human brain and are expressed in nearly every tissue and cell. The two main receptors are the CB1 and CB2 receptor. CB1 is located in the brain and on neurons throughout the body, while the CB2 is mostly found in the immune system. Given the abundance of these receptors, it’s not hard to imagine that these receptors are important for something.   However, THC and other cannabis parts are not the only plant compounds which can affect the ECS. Other plants produce compounds which can change the production and breakdown of Anandamide. Anandamide activates the same receptor as THC and is one of many endogenous cannabinoids produced by our body.

The recent discovery of different plants with compounds that can modulate this system means we can no longer simply define plant cannabinoids as merely a product of cannabis. The authors propose that the term phytocannabinoid is more appropriate now that scientists have discovered that BetaCaryophyllene activates the CB2 receptor and is “among the most abundant plant essential oil component.” Betacaryophyllene in found in nearly all plants, in fact it was proposed years ago that it is a “dietary cannabinoid.”

So, what else have you been eating that mimics the effects of molecules from cannabis?

Echinacea, Ruta graveolens (Citrus Family), and the Brassica genus (Mustard family, i.e. Broccoli) all contain compounds which may bind the CB2 receptor, some with an affinity or strength similar to THC. Note that unlike the CB1 receptor, the CB2 receptor does not cause psychotropic effects.

Even the Apiaceae family contains a compound which interacts with the CB1 receptor. Why should you care about the Apiacea family? Carrots.

Carrots and its relatives contain the compound falcarinol.  This appears to interact with both cannabinoid receptors, undergoing a mysterious alkylation reaction at the CB1 receptor. The questions of how and what this compound is doing to the CB1 receptor still needs to be investigated before we can draw any conclusions about the similarities between cannabis and carrots.

Polyphenols are common components of tea and were speculated to interact with cannabinoid receptors. However, according to this article, Gertsch and collegues think that these may be non-specific interactions.  The smelly molecular class of compounds known as terpenoids represents another potential group that can modulate the effects of cannabis and may affect the ECS. Terpenoids are abundant in vegetables and fruit.

One misconception or urban legend regarding cannabis is the presence of cannabinoids in chocolate. Sorry to disappoint some of you but that infamous research has never been duplicated… However what is true about chocolate and cannabinoids is far more fascinating and beautifully complex.  There are fatty acid derivatives in chocolate and many other plants which inhibit the FAAH enzyme. The FAAH enzyme destroys or eats Anandamide. The blocking of this FAAH enzyme leads to an increase or elevation of the levels of Anandamide. That’s right chocolate, like aspirin, elevates the so called “natural THC” in your body. No wonder chocolate is so popular. Halloween will never be the same for this scientist.

It is obvious that phytocannabinoids are found in abundance in nature, is our next step to regulate these plants like cannabis, since large doses of the active ingredients may have some cannabis-like effects?  Maybe less drastic actions should be taken.

A lot of work remains for scientists to determine the effectiveness of these phytocannabinoids and related compounds.  If you want to engage in cannabis research, a great place to start would be looking at other ingredients of a healthy diet for new members of the phytocannabinoid family.

Nature has provided a single plant which produces THC-acid. THC-acid readily becomes THC, the most potent phytocannabinoid known to man. Why does nature not provide a single other plant that produces this compound? When all around us, we can find molecular messengers from plants that influence subtle components of the endcannabinoid system.

The take home message is that fatty acid derivatives, terpenes, and polyphenols are found in numerous plants. Fruits and veggies represent another source, if not treasure troves, of compounds which may interact with the endocannabinoid system.

Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol binds cannabinoid (CB1 and CB2) receptors, which are activated by endogenous compounds (endocannabinoids) and are involved in a wide range of physiopathological processes (e.g. modulation of neurotransmitter release, regulation of pain perception, and of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and liver functions). The well-known psychotropic effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, which are mediated by activation of brain CB1 receptors, have greatly limited its clinical use. However, the plant Cannabis contains many cannabinoids with weak or no psychoactivity that, therapeutically, might be more promising than Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Here, we provide an overview of the recent pharmacological advances, novel mechanisms of action, and potential therapeutic applications of such non-psychotropic plant-derived cannabinoids. Special emphasis is given to cannabidiol, the possible applications of which have recently emerged in inflammation, diabetes, cancer, affective and neurodegenerative diseases, and to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabivarin, a novel CB1 antagonist which exerts potentially useful actions in the treatment of epilepsy and obesity.
