Montana Biotech is a lab focusing on RE-discovering the science behind cannabis. Cannabinoids are the therapeutic compounds found in the cannabis genus. Both hemp and marijuana produce phyto-cannabinoids. The true difference between cannabis hemp and cannabis marijuana is the plants ability to produce, enzymaticaly, THCA. New discoveries have lead researchers to the hypothesis that it is the functionality of the enzyme, THCA synthase, not the absence of the gene coding for the enzyme that differentiates marijuana varieties from cannabis hemp varieties. Plant derived cannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, are created by the cannabis plant through a single enzyme catalyzed reaction. Each cannabinoid has a corresponding enzyme catalyzing their creation. CBN is the only known cannabinoid NOT derived from an enzymatic process; instead CBN is a degradation product, UV light exposure, heating, of THC.
Cannabis potency testing has come of age! Knowing the cannabinoid profile of a cannabis strain or variety will help providers of medical cannabis fit a patients’ condition to a medicine they will benefit from the best. Montana Biotech offers cannabinoid potency testing in Montana. There are two types of testing that can be employed by a laboratory or individual to analyze their cannabis, qualitative and quantitative.
Qualitative testing of cannabinoids:
When thinking of the difference between qualitative vs quantitative testing methods think of quality verses quantity. Thin layer chromatography, T.L.C., is a qualitative method of testing cannabis that provides a “picture” or “finger print” of the quality of phytocannabinoids present in a medical marijuana sample. It is an absent or present testing method; is CBD in the sample or not? T.L.C. is not a method to determine the amount of CBD in a cannabis sample as accurately as a quantitative testing method like gas chromatography, GC.
Quantitative testing of cannabinoids:
When thinking of the difference between quantitative vs qualitative testing methods think of quantity verses quality. Quantitative methods determine how much THC, CBD, CBN or other novel cannabinoids are present in a medical cannabis sample or cannabis infused preparation. Some of the well known quantitative methods are gas chromatography (GC), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Both methods are currently used by cannabis potency testing labs all over the U.S.
Montana Biotech specializes in cannabis potency lab testing. Botanical Genetic profiling is now offered to help with the identifying and categorizing of new varieties / cultivars / strains for the medical cannabis industry. Cannabis varieties / cultivars / strains will be added to our data base and made public as soon as samples are scrutinized and released by the grower. Montana Biotech is willing to help patients and caregivers achieve the best results from their medicine.

Botanical Testing Services
Montana BioTech currently offers two types of testing.
Botanical Diagnostic Analysis:
This service is intended for both the caregiver and patient. Montana BioTech collects sample/s from the caregiver or patient of 500mg or ½ gram. We then isolate the resin and put it through a rigorous lab testing process. Then, MBT will analyze the data and return to the caregiver or patient a document outlining a percent per volume amount of the botanical cannabinoids THC, CBD, CBN, as well as percent of assayable botanical cannabinoids. This lab test is only representative of the sample volume and is not a certification. 50% deposit is due when the sample/s are submitted. Test results are confidential and are released at the caregivers or patients discretion.
Botanical Diagnostic Analysis can be used for:
-Perfecting the curing of botanical flowers.
-Switching to a new technique of growing. Soil vs hydro etc.
-Helping to determine harvest times for different varieties/cultivars/ strains.
-Self analyzing varieties/cultivars / strains for therapeutic effect.
–Analyzing varieties/cultivars / strains for breeding or results from crosses.
Certification:
This service is intended for the breeder. Any person developing a unique botanical variety/cultivar /strain and wanting to release it should get some kind of documentation certifying their cross. Caregivers can use this service to certify their medicine as quality. This is a methods based test, and is conducted by Montana BioTech technicians. We collect a representative sample of the volume to be certified (~ 1g/ .25 pound), isolate the resin and put the sample through a rigorous lab testing process. We analyze the data and prepare a results sheet. Montana BioTech will then issue a certificate to the caregiver or patient certifying the specified volume at the analyzed THC, CBD, CBN content / levels. 20% is due when collection has take place. Test results are confidential and are released at the caregivers or patients discretion.
Certification is for:
-Assuring a caregivers’ patient/s that they are providing a quality botanical product.
-Transfers to other caregivers. Assure them the medicine is of top quality.
-Releasing a new botanical variety/cultivar / strain to other caregivers.
-Patients to better determine the therapeutic effects of certified strains on THEIR condition.
-Helping to legitimize a controversial industry.

TLC, UNODC (United Nations Office on Drug and Crime)
TLC was the method of choice for this study as it provides a means of rapidly and visually analysing a number of samples simultaneously. Unlike the comparison of two samples in order to assess whether they are the same (or different), when quantitative analysis is essential, assessment of origin is qualitative, since the sample under study and the reference samples are, in fact, different. There is thus little point in using more powerful techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography as the quantitative information provided is likely to confuse the picture. The TLC system was designed to give information on the cannabivarins in addition to the more commonly studied cannabinoids. The principal cannabinoids observed using this system are given in table 2. Sample preparation and detection were as previously described [ 47] [ 48] . The solvent system used was a mixture of chloroform (ethanol-free) and l,l-dichloroethane (15:10) with simple ascending TLC on 10 x 20 cm silica gel pre-coated plates with a layer thickness of 0.25 mm (E. Merck, Darmstadt, G.F.R., Art. No. 5729) [ 46] . Each extract was analysed within one hour of preparation. Twenty different samples of herbal cannabis and cannabis resin from several different countries were subjected to hot-solvent extraction to simulate the illicit preparation of liquid cannabis. The resulting chromatograms were compared with those of the starting material..
The control in this test was ~17% THC by volume… You can tell the size of the dots for Connie Chung (A) and (B) are larger. You can draw you own conclusions!

Abstract
The use of Cannabis is illicit in numerous countries and the increasing consumption has led to a multiplication of scientific studies. New methods of planar chromatography such as Automated Multiple Development (AMD) and Optimum Performance Laminar Chromatography (OPLC) techniques can be used as a substitute for the traditional TLC for the identification and quantification of the Indian hemp components. Each method offers its own advantage: high resolution with neither diffusion nor spot stretching for AMD, speed, efficiency and the possibility of working in semi-preparative mode for OPLC.
